Scientific Institutions in Beijing
There are over 100 universities in Beijing and its surrounding area. There are also many research institutions relevant to plant pathology, such as China Agricultural University, Peking University, the Plant Protection Institute at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Institute of Microbiology at Chinese Academy of Sciences.

China Agricultural University (CAU). As the origin of higher agricultural education in China, China Agricultural University (formerly Beijing Agricultural University) can trace its history back to 1905. The Centennial Celebration of CAU and the World Agriculture Conference were convened in the Great Hall of the People on 16 September 2005. CAU covers a wide range of disciplines on an integrated basis, such as agriculture and life science, resources and environment, information and computer science, agricultural engineering and automation science, economic management and social sciences, etc. The discipline of Plant Pathology in China was also first established at the university, and has been a national key discipline with many distinguished professors for decades. With 14,500 students students and 7,800 postgraduate students, 3,000 professors and staff, CAU has established a complete and harmonized system for BSc, MSc and PhD degree programs. Since 2002, more than 3,000 scientific papers have been published in Science Citation Index journals, including "Nature", "Science", and "Cell". CAU has successfully established international cooperation programs with more than 20 countries and regions, and has signed reciprocal agreements with more than 60 prestigious universities in the world. Hundreds of foreign scientists and specialists have been invited to give lectures and exchange experiences of research progress (www.cau.edu.cn).

The Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (IPPCAAS). The IPPCAAS was founded in 1957, as a non-profit national institute dedicated to both basic and applied sciences of plant protection in China. IPPCAAS currently has 160 employees, including 111 scientists and technicians. It has undertaken numerous research projects ranging from the national program of plant protection and serving as a nationwide coordinator for research collaboration in plant protection. From IPPCAAS, more than 2500 scientific research papers and over 100 books have been published. It is one of the institutes certified by the Academic Degree Committee of the National Council with authority to grant doctoral degrees in plant pathology, agricultural entomology, pesticide science, weed science, agricultural microbiology, monitoring and forecasting of plant pests and bio-safety. Since its inception, IPPCAAS has progressively developed into an important training center for advanced research in plant protection in China. IPPCAAS co-hosted the 15th International Plant Protection Congress in 2004 (www.ippcaas.cn).

The Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS). IMCAS was founded in 1958. The institute is a national comprehensive research institution which performs a wide spectrum of basic and applied research in the field of microbiology. IMCAS is committed to three missions: basic and applied research targeting national strategic needs and meeting world-class standards, acting as a think-tank for the government, and graduate student training. Nine research centers have been established to carry out studies on on microbial resources, microbial genomics, agricultural biotechnology, bio-energy and industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, extremophiles, microbial metabolic engineering, molecular virology, and molecular immunology, respectively. IMCAS hosts 310 faculty and staff, including five CAS academicians and 240 research personnel. The institute offers a broad range of academic programs that lead to postgraduate degrees. Currently, there are 314 graduate students enrolled in various programs toward the doctoral and master's degrees. As the leading national research institution in the field of microbiology, it is the source of more than 1,000 scientific papers were published in Science Citation Index journals, including "Science", "Cell", etc. IMCAS has established a network of international collaborations that involves scientists from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Russia, United Kingdom, France and other European countries (www.im.ac.cn).
